Al-Dhahabi (b.673AH/1274CD - d.748AH/1348CE) was born in Damascus where his family lived from the time of his grandfather `Uthman. He sometimes identified himself as Ibn al-Dhahabi - son of the goldsmith - in reference to his father's profession. He was a great Shafi'i hadith master (hafiz) and historian of Islam. Of Turkoman origin, he first studied in Damascus and then traveled to Cairo and other many other cities in pursuit of knowledge. In addition to his mastery of hadith, he was also a foremost authority in canonical Koranic readings (qira'at), textual criticism, and encyclopedic historian and biographer.
