The early Arabic poetry of Abu al-Hasan Ali bin Jabalah, known as al-Akawwak (160/776 - 213/828). Al-Akawwak was born in al-Harbiyyan near Baghdad in present day Iraq. He was born blind or became blind because of illness at a very young age, and had leprosy. He was known and admired for his panegyrical odes.
